Charlie Mulgrew believes Celtic should attempt to bring Evan Ferguson to Glasgow but the flaw in his argument actually creates a broader recruitment point for the Hoops support.
Mulgrew’s comments highlight not whether or not Celtic can sign the player, but points the Parkhead club towards the standards they should be aiming for.
Last season Celtic turned to the likes of Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu to lead the line for the title race.
But in reality, while Mulgrew admits he would ‘love to see’ Ferguson strut his stuff at Celtic Park, the timing of the deal makes it impossible. But it does highlight the standard of striker the Parkhead scouts should be looking at.

Mulgrew would ‘definitely take’ Evan Ferguson at Celtic
Ferguson has been linked to Celtic in the January transfer window, but the Irishman opted to join Roma on loan.
His deal at the Serie A club expires in December and Mulgrew says Ferguson is a player who would add quality to the Celtic team.
Mulgrew told the Daily Record, “I’d love to see Evan Ferguson at Celtic. I don’t know whether he would want to come or not but he’s somebody that if he was available and wanted to come up here, I think he’s a player that I’d definitely take at Celtic.
“We saw him scoring at Celtic Park for Roma last season. He’s got ability, he’s a finisher, he’s proved that. He’s somebody who would know what the club’s all about.
“I would definitely take him. I don’t know a lot about his current fitness to be honest with you, but that’s something that we could take into consideration. But I think that he’s somebody that would definitely add to the Celtic squad.”
Ferguson has scored five goals in 22 appearances at Roma and while a deal is not viable right now, his stats show that he is a striker that Celtic should be homing in on this summer.
Celtic need a player of Ferguson’s calibre, not squad fillers
At just 21, Ferguson has already built a strong CV across spells in the Premier League and Serie A.
- 41 senior career goals
- 12 Premier League goals before turning 20
- 5 goals and 2 assists at Roma in 2025/26
- 15 shots on target from 27 total attempts at Roma this season (strong accuracy rate)
- 2.62 xG
- 2 assists and 15 chances created
Ferguson’s stats show why Mulgrew’s comments hit home. Not because a transfer is realistic, but because this is the standard of striker Celtic should be focusing on rather than unknown quantities like Cvancara and Adamu.
Celtic can identify talent at that level but the challenge is that when players with Ferguson’s profile are available, Celtic need to be quicker to get the deal done.
Because if the Hoops did manage to pull off the loan signing of Ferguson last December, the chances are the title race would have been over long before Hearts visited Parkhead on the final day of the season.
