Why Kelechi Iheanacho’s Nigeria snub is good news for Celtic

Kelechi Iheanacho is one of the players remaining at Lennoxtown during the international break.

10 Celtic players were called up for international duty, but Iheanacho wasn’t one of those called up by Nigeria.

He was one of seven Celtic stars to be snubbed by their national teams, with Nigeria opting against calling him up since May.

It may come as a surprise that the 29-year-old hasn’t been called up, with Iheanacho finding his feet at Parkhead; however, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the Hoops.

Kelechi Iheanacho is still getting warmed up

Iheanacho scored his third goal of the season in Celtic’s 3-2 win against Motherwell to continue his hot streak.

Only Benjamin Nygren has scored more goals this season, despite the fact that the Nigeria international had no pre-season and less games to play.

He is looking sharper with every game that goes by, but this brief pause in play will do him the world of good in the long-term.

It will allow him to recover and be ready for the next run of fixtures, which includes a Premier Sports Cup semi-final clash against Rangers.

Kelechi Iheanacho is a fan favourite already

Celtic fans loved Iheanacho’s celebrations against Motherwell after Daizen Maeda’s winner and he is looking like the epitome of a fan favourite.

Supporters were hesitant when he was signed to replace Adam Idah after he joined Swansea City, but for a free transfer, you can’t ask for much more.

Brendan Rodgers gets the best out of Iheanacho and more time working with him on the training ground is only going to be a positive going forward for Celtic.
