There is a bit of a Celtic theme to Liverpool’s backline ahead of next season.
Celtic hero Virgil van Dijk has represented the champions of England since 2018 and is regarded as the best defender in the world, after also winning two titles in Scotland.
Added to that, boyhood Celtic fan Andy Robertson has also been a star performer for Liverpool, but he could be headed to Atlético Madrid this summer.
Whilst the Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in May, Celtic have supposedly banked a windfall close to £7 million because of the 30% sell-on clause in his contract when he left Glasgow for the German side in 2021.
But when Frimpong was at Celtic, he won over the fans pretty much straight away, after joining from Manchester City as a teenager.
However, not everybody was seemingly impressed by what they saw from the all-action fullback, including one ridiculous claim from Alex Rae.

Who is better? Celtic hero Jeremie Frimpong or Rangers captain James Tavernier?
When Frimpong was in the green and white colours, the fans made it clear that Frimpong is a better player than his counterpart at Ibrox.
James Tavernier has played for Rangers for over ten years, winning one Premiership title, but in 2019, Rae wasn’t having the comparisons between the Englishman and Frimpong.
This was the post the former Rangers man put up on social media, and despite the Celtic Park faithful telling him otherwise, at the time, his message looks even sillier now.
‘Seriously, 😐,’ wrote Rae in 2019. ‘Frimpong better than Tavernier??? Oh my days, he’s only played 10 games. 😄😄😄’
Frimpong’s career numbers compared to Tavernier’s
Like many Celtic players since the turn of the century, Frimpong has won as much (three each) or more in Glasgow over a short period (51 matches) as Tavernier has over a longer period (513 games).
| Tavernier’s career games for a top-flight club | Goals | Assists | Trophies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 523 | 130 | 142 | 3 |
| Frimpong’s career games for a top-flight club | Goals | Assists | Trophies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 241 | 33 | 52 | 6 |
Not forgetting that the rising Dutch star also became champion of Germany under new Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso in 2023/24.
And now he is joining Liverpool after their triumph under Arne Slot last term, and you surely expect him to be adding more trophies to his cabinet in the coming years.
