Celtic could sign free-scoring striker on the cheap after he refused to play for club over pay dispute

Celtic have been linked with a whole host of strikers in recent months.

David Strelec’s father confirmed the Hoops were still interested while there have been some talk about Celtic going in for Bojan Miovski again.

Hugh Keevins thinks Celtic lack firepower up top and although there is plenty of time left in the transfer window, finding players who will improve the squad comes at a premium.

However, there may be a chance to sign one forward after his future at his current club remains uncertain.

Louis Munteanu refused to play for Cluj over pay dispute

A bid for Louis Munteanu was rejected by CFR Cluj earlier in the transfer window after Celtic and two French clubs had bids rejected.

Munteanu scored 25 goals for the Romanian side last season and had been featuring for them this campaign until he was left out of the squad for their Europa League qualifier against Braga on Thursday.

Cluj boss Dan Petrescu said the forward’s absence was due to injury but on Romanian sports channel IAM Sport, they claimed the real reason behind why he didn’t play was due to an ongoing pay dispute.

Remus Raureanu said: “He was upset because he hadn’t received some money promised when signing the contract, approximately 200,000 euros. I don’t know if he’s received the money in the meantime, but from his behavior it seems like he hasn’t.”

Door has opened for Celtic to sign Louis Munteanu

It feels like this would be an open goal for Celtic in terms of landing a striker.

The 23-year-old is under contract until 2028 but Raureanu has told Cluj that they must sell him now or risk losing him for a cheaper fee later in the season.

He added: The club should solve the problem, that is, sell him for the highest price they can get now. If you keep him and he doesn’t play, he devalues, he won’t be more expensive in November. At least take advantage. Give him now.”

Celtic may have four striking options now, but a player of this calibre available for a cut-price fee could be too good to turn down.
