Celtic will need a new goalkeeper in the summer to replace Kasper Schmeichel and have been linked with one player that Ange Postecoglou knows well.

Schmeichel is expected to leave Celtic after having to undergo surgery on a long-term shoulder problem, leaving Viljami Sinisalo and Ross Doohan as the only options available.

The Hoops have been linked with Daniel Iversen in recent days, as well as a potential Bosman approach for Jon McCracken but now an international veteran has been tipped as a possible new addition.

Celtic join the race to sign Mat Ryan but face competition

According to Voetbal 24, Celtic will do battle with Club Brugge to sign Australia international Mat Ryan.

The Levante goalkeeper, who has 103 caps for the Socceroos, joined Levante in the summer but is being eyed by Brugge as the replacement for Simon Mignolet, who will retire at the end of the season.

Ryan is also out of contract this summer and has previously been linked to the Hoops, largely when Postecoglou was in charge at Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou is a long-term admirer of Mat Ryan

Postecoglou has known Ryan ever since the 34-year-old first began his career in the A-League with Central Coast Mariners.

While in charge of Brisbane Roar back in 2011, the former Celtic manager came up against an in-form teenage Ryan and admitted that he was fed up of the sight of him following another impressive performance.

He told the club website: “He’s fantastic. I’m sick of him, to be honest. Every time he plays against us he’s outstanding.

Has he done enough?

“He’s a fantastic young talent and he seems to get it to the right areas, and even when he’s not … he dives and stretches out and gets in the way.

“I’m glad we got that out of the way and managed to get one past him.”
