Celtic set for Hyeon-gyu Oh payout as striker ‘agrees’ big-money Genk exit

Celtic are set for an injection of even more cash, it seems.

The club received £4.5 million from Genk when they sold Hyeon-gyu Oh to the Belgian side 18 months ago.

Brendan Rodgers had turned his attentions to Adam Idah at the time, but the South Korean striker went on to have an impactful season in Belgium, despite mostly being used from the bench.

Oh thought he was joining Stuttgart for £24 million in the summer, with a deal fully agreed, but was heartbroken when medical issues caused the move to fall through.

This hasn’t stopped him from being on the January market, though, and he looks set to finally complete his exit this week.

Hyeon-gyu Oh to earn Celtic payoff with Genk exit

According to Turkish journalist Ertan Suzgun, Besiktas have agreed a €15 million deal to sign Oh from Genk.

With the Turkish window ending later than in the rest of the Europe, the player is expected in Istanbul on Wednesday for his medical, having been identified as the club’s replacement for Tammy Abraham.

Celtic hold a sell-on clause from their sale of Oh to Genk, but the exact portion of the fee that they receive isn’t clear.

Of course, it won’t be as much as what they would’ve been due had he made that Stuttgart move in the summer to replace Nick Woltemade.

That move potentially would’ve seen Oh return to Celtic Park this month in the knockout round play-off of the Europa League.

The 24-year-old has scored nine goals for Genk this season: six domestically and three in Europe. He has been used more as a starter following the sale of Tolu Orukadare to Wolves.

A concern for new Genk boss Nicky Hayen would be that he doesn’t have time to replace Oh with a new striker, given that the Belgian window is now closed.

Hayen openly discussed the vacant Celtic job before making the move to Genk, having left Club Brugge in acrimonious circumstances.

Hyeon-gyu Oh’s Celtic message after Rangers goal

Earlier this season, Oh scored at Ibrox for Genk, on a night which really should’ve seen him score a hat-trick.

After the win over Russell Martin’s side at Ibrox, the striker was asked his thoughts on Rangers – and couldn’t resist a smirk.

He said: “Rangers? I don’t know, they’re just working hard every day. They’ll just keep going… [laughs.]

“It was one of my dreams to score in Ibrox, so I did and I’m happy. I just believe in myself, this is my job. I did it.

“I should’ve scored three or four goals, but I even score one and we win.”
