Celtic told what Dermot Desmond could do ‘right now’ amid Rangers and 49ers’ ‘£20m’ statement

It’s time to gear up for the new season, as Celtic have another title to win.

Brendan Rodgers delivered another successful campaign for Celtic in 2024/25, including winning the double, and it has resulted in a lot of change across the road.

Not only do Rangers have a new manager in Russell Martin, but they also have some new investment in the form of the San Francisco 49ers.

All of this has, once again, resulted in more noise from Ibrox and their fans ahead of the new 2025/26 season than from the champions of Scotland themselves.

But Celtic are going along their way, including majority shareholder Dermot Desmond backing Rodgers with some new players in the 2025 summer transfer market.

Dermot Desmond’s spending power at Celtic, as the San Francisco 49ers put £20m on the table at Rangers

When the 49ers’ investment in Rangers was confirmed, they shared in a statement that ‘£20 million’ would be available for the new manager.

But Alan Brazil wanted to point out on talkSPORT that, whilst the 49ers are ‘astute businessmen’, the main man at Celtic is ‘very, very, very wealthy’ and £20 million is ‘petty cash’ for the Irishman.

Although, the Celtic-mad pundit explained, why Desmond could write such a cheque right now, ‘he doesn’t do that’, because he ‘makes Celtic generate its own money’.

“I was just thinking as well, they are clearly, Mr (David) Murray, there saying that, ‘they are astute businessmen (the 49ers),” said Brazil.

“Well, we know Mr Desmond at Celtic is very, very, very (wealthy). He could just write a cheque now. It’s petty cash for £20 million if he wishes.

“But he doesn’t do that. He makes Celtic generate its own money. If he has to, then he will.”

Ally McCoist agreed: “Of course he does. Listen, Alan, you know as well as I do, they have been a great success for the last few years. The performances in Europe. Some great performances in Europe and the Champions League, and without any real competition domestically.”

What is Desmond’s net worth?

Celtic banked £38.22 million from the 2024/25 edition of the Champions League – after losing out to Bayern Munich in the play-offs.

This doesn’t include what Celtic would generate on matchdays and from merchandise, etc… so you can see how the club remains healthy.
