‘I don’t see the point’ – Celtic questioned over summer signing, claims Gordon Strachan played a part

A total of six players have been signed by Celtic this summer.

The 2025 summer transfer window hasn’t even been opened for a month, and there have been a lot of changes to Brendan Rodgers’ squad, including seven players leaving.

One of the themes during this window is Celtic bringing back some old faces, including left-back Kieran Tierney and goalkeeper Ross Doohan.

In the last 12 months, Celtic have made some big changes to the goalkeeping department, with Joe Hart’s retirement in 2024 sparking that, as well as the signings of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo.

But it’s the arrival of Doohan that has come under the spotlight.

Celtic questioned over Ross Doohan signing amid Gordon Strachan claim

Frank McAvennie didn’t pull any punches because he has stated that he ‘doesn’t see the point’ in Celtic’s call to bring in Doohan as the third-choice keeper.

The ex-Celtic man also stated that the former Aberdeen player ‘isn’t better than’ Scott Bain, who left the club and joined newly-promoted Falkirk.

Added to that, McAvennie told his Let Me Frank Podcast that he thinks former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has ‘something to do with’ the Doohan signing.

“Ross Doohan, he was at Celtic as well,” said McAvennie.

“I think wee Gordon (Strachan) has something to do with that. Gordon, is he the agent or something?! He has worked for Celtic and Dundee. Aye (he is employed by Dundee at a very senior level).

“I am not criticising Gordon. I just don’t see the point in getting a number three in. (Scott) Bain had to go and play. If this boy isn’t better than Bain, I don’t know why.”

What is Celtic hero Strachan doing now?

The last time Strachan was in the dugout was as the coach of Scotland, a gig that lasted four years, before he left in 2017, and he was eventually replaced by Steve Clarke.

The last time he was in that form on the club scene was his gig at Middlesbrough, which came straight after his Celtic spell, and ended pretty quickly in 2010.

But now Strachan, who won six trophies at Celtic Park, including three titles, is now in the boardroom at Dundee.

As listed on Dundee’s website, Strachan’s official title is: ‘Technical Director.’
