Charlie Mulgrew makes it clear what Greg Taylor needs to do at Celtic ahead of Kieran Tierney’s return

All attention will now turn to next season, and there is a lot on Celtic’s plate.

Many of the Celtic Park faithful are looking forward to Kieran Tierney’s return as a Bosman – his contract at Arsenal expires at the end of June.

That’s one left-back pencilled down for Brendan Rodgers for the 2025/26 campaign, it’s just a case of who Tierney will be competing with.

Jeffrey Schlupp was on a six-month loan, but he has since returned to Crystal Palace, and his contract at the London club expires this summer too.

Another man who is in the same boat at Celtic is Greg Taylor, but nothing has been confirmed yet, regarding his future.

Charlie Mulgrew tells Greg Taylor what to do ahead of Kieran Tierney’s Celtic return

As of this moment, Taylor’s final game for Celtic was the Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen over the weekend at Hampden.

Yes, it ended in defeat, but in the overall picture, he won the double this term, and Charlie Mulgrew still feels he is a valuable player to Rodgers’ squad.

Mulgrew told Premier Sports why Taylor needs to stay on board, even with Tierney coming back home.

“Celtic need to keep Greg Taylor,” said Mulgrew. “Kieran Tierney comes in, and he will play a lot of games.

“But you need somebody else there. There are so many games. They played 60-odd games this year, or around about that figure, so you need players to back up and the depth in the squad. 

“And he plays that inverted role so well. He comes into midfield, plays as a number six and does it brilliantly, so I hope he signs.”

At the age of 27, Taylor is still at the peak of his powers, and you could even argue that he has a few more levels to hit.

But it’s fair to say that this season, he has come under fire from the fans, whether right or wrong, and it has resulted in Rodgers having to come out and publicly defend his player.
