Celtic need new players, but they also need to offload a few.

The likes of Maik Nawrocki and Luis Palma have been shipped out on loan to Hannover 96 and Lech Poznan respectively this summer.

Marco Tilio is another who will exit on loan to Rapid Wien, although Celtic are waiting to sign a replacement winger before sanctioning the deal.

Stephen Welsh is likely to join Tilio in heading out on loan, with Plymouth Argyle interested in taking the centre-back.

That was first reported on July 30. Now, Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has dropped a fresh update.

Anthony Joseph’s update on Plymouth-linked Stephen Welsh

Joseph took to social media platform X and explained that Celtic are still considering whether to accept Plymouth’s original straight loan offer made at the end of July.

The EFL League One outfit have now improved that bid by adding the option to buy Welsh at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Joseph reports that while Plymouth’s second offer remains on the table, they will scour the market for other defenders while they await a response from the Hoops.

Plymouth have lost their first two league games of the new season to Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers, and currently sit second bottom of the table.

Welsh isn’t part of Brendan Rodgers plans

Welsh has no future at Celtic, that is certainly clear. The Hoops have four centre-backs ahead of the Scotsman in the pecking order.

It’s time for Welsh to leave again having played for KV Mechelen on loan for the second half of last season.

He’s contracted at Celtic until 2027, but it appears unlikely the 25-year-old will see out that deal. Welsh has made 69 appearances for the Bhoys, scoring four goals.
