French Report: Celtic have approached Rennes for defender Sacha Boey
Celtic are still very much after a Rennes right-back, but it appears that it’s Sacha Boey the Bhoys are interested in.
However, a report from L’Equipe states that Celtic are, in fact, after another right-back from Rennes, and it’s Sacha Boey. The French youth international spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 strugglers Dijon. He stood out, but couldn’t stop the side being relegated at the end of 20-21.
According to the report, Boey has a year left on his contract, and with Celtic’s interest, a deal could be struck shortly. Additional reporting from the Herald states that Celtic have offered around £1m for the youth international.
According to the Herald, Ange Postecoglou remains interested in Soppy, but no concrete offer has been made for the hotly-tipped right-back.
Boey, who predominantly plays on the right, can also fill in as a left-back. He made 29 appearances for Dijon in Ligue 1 last season [Transfermarkt]. At Dijon, he made his mark defensively in trying circumstances, averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per 90 in Ligue 1 [WhoScored?].

Celtic approach Rennes for Sacha Boey
So, if you’re keeping up: we were linked with one potentially excellent Stade Rennais right-back, now we’re targeting another. This isn’t to say that a deal for Soppy is dead, as such, but it seems Celtic have assessed the situation and adjudged Boey to have similar qualities.
It’s a bit of a confusing one. Certainly, I can’t remember the last time Celtic were linked with two players from the same club, in the same position. While some supporters, myself included, would be excited by a bid for Brandon Soppy, Boey comes with decent pedigree, too.
Boey was a star in very difficult circumstances last season. Dijon were marooned at the bottom of Ligue 1 last season, ending 19 points from safety [Sky Sports].
With Ligue 1 in crisis, even reputable clubs like Rennes are being forced to sell. After TV rights chaos and the impact of Covid-19, only the truly monied clubs will come out of this period (relatively) unscathed. Monaco, Nice and PSG should be safe enough.
Stade Rennais, though, at least have the luxury of expensive assets. While Soppy and Boey will likely leave quite cheaply, they do have Eduardo Camavinga. Transfermarkt value the 18-year-old at nearly £50m, and he’s undoubtedly a star of the future.
