‘He can’t’ – Andy Halliday worried about star with ‘all the attributes’ joining Celtic

Celtic are in for a busy summer transfer window as they continue their dominance in Scotland.

Brendan Rodgers is cruising to another Premiership title and is also on for the Treble, but that doesn’t mean you rest on your laurels.

This is Celtic’s chance to further strengthen and make that gap in Scottish football between the rest as big as it has ever been.

For years and years, Celtic have showcased their strength in the transfer market and their ability to bring in young stars, before transforming them into superstars.

Many of them are initially unknown figures, like Matt O’Riley’s time at Celtic or the rise of Nicolas Kuhn this season.

But, in the case of the next young star who could come through the door, he is more known and is already donning the colours of a Premiership side.

Lennon Miller is thriving at Motherwell and there is a chance that he could be donning Celtic colours next season.

Andy Halliday worried about Lennon Miller joining Celtic

Andy Halliday is Miller’s captain at Motherwell and he lauded the qualities the 18-year-old has in his locker, including how he has ‘all the attributes’.

Midfield is one of Celtic’s biggest strengths, with the likes of Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo struggling to earn regular starts because of the quality in front of them.

Callum McGregor deploys the number six role, with Reo Hatate and Arne Engels either side, as Halliday was asked where Miller would play at Celtic.

Halliday stated that he prefers Miller as a ‘box-to-box’ player, before the former Rangers man started to sound worried and added that he simply can’t play for Celtic, as he told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

Roger Hannah stated: “You sometimes wonder if Celtic’s midfield will be as effective when Callum McGregor isn’t there. I thought they were brilliant (post McGregor going off vs St Mirren).

“Engels looked brilliant in that role (number six). McCowan was terrific. Pace and energy. Hatate seemed to spring on as well, so they are very well set. Bernardo is out for a wee while with an injury. I don’t think you will see Holm back in the building.

“So, Lennon Miller could come in and add something there. Out of those three positions. The six that Callum sits in or the two either side. Where would Lennon Miller be at his best?”

Halliday responded: “I like him more as a box-to-box, just because he has all the attributes. I don’t think he should be nullified to just one area of the pitch.

“In all fairness, I think Callum McGregor and a prime Callum McGregor, even as a holding midfielder. He always likes to burst forward. You see the amount of goals he has scored this season.

“Again, you don’t want to restrict Miller when he has so much going forward. I think he has been our main creating force, in terms of chances created. You can see that he has that bit to his game in the final third.

“But not for Celtic. He can’t play for Celtic. No chance.”

Miller getting back to his best after Motherwell injury

Miller missed around six weeks of action through injury, including Celtic’s 3-1 win at Parkhead last month.

But he has since returned to a team that recently parted ways with their manager – Stuart Kettlewell – and come back into the XI without needing time to settle in.

Halliday explained how you usually might need a few weeks to get that quality back, but Miller is the exception.

“I think, in the last couple of games, he has shown that he is already there, to be fair,” said Halliday on Miller getting back to his best after coming back from injury.

“I think it was going to take time. It was an injury that kept him out longer than initially expected.

“And again, such is the calibre of Lennon Miller, there was no bedding in period. There was no two or three weeks of training before you can get back into the team. We are in the business end of the season where you need your best players available.

“So, he got flung straight in, and again, he wasn’t quite at that match sharpness or fitness, but absolutely, he has been back to his best over the last couple of games.”
