There are some Celtic fans who feel Brendan Rodgers’ squad is weaker compared to last season.
This stems from Celtic’s work in the winter transfer market, including the exit of Kyogo Furuhashi, and how things have been panning out during the 2025 summer transfer window.
The Celtic supporters aren’t too pleased with who has come in, and how there are many holes within the squad, as bids are now being rejected for Jakob Breum.
The Go Ahead Eagles winger had a standout campaign last time out, including winning the KNVB Cup, the club’s first major trophy in 92 years.
But why are the powers that be at Parkhead dithering over players like Breum?

Charlie Mulgrew defends Celtic board over Jakob Breum transfer situation
There aren’t many people defending the Celtic board at this moment in time, but Charlie Mulgrew is doing that right now.
Speaking on Go Radio, Mulgrew noted ‘how good a job’ the Celtic board have done during the last 20 years in the transfer market, and ‘this is the way they operate.’
“I feel that’s the way negotiations go,” said Mulgrew about the Breum situation. “It’s easy for us to sit and say, ‘we are desperate to get signings in’, get talking and excitement for the season.
“But Celtic are looking from the board point of view, and how good a job they have done in the last 20-odd years. This is the way they operate.
“They will be waiting also to see if there is Champions League football, and how much that brings. All this stuff comes into consideration.
“If they (Go Ahead Eagles) are saying ‘£5-6 million’. You are imagining it’s going to set around the £3 million mark. It’s the way negotiations work. I am not claiming to be an expert. If Celtic go in with £3 million now, they will be saying, ‘no, we want £5-6 million’, and it will still drag on in the window.”
Reason behind Celtic’s lack of push in the summer transfer market
Yes, this is the way the club operates, but it’s not ideal that Rodgers has expressed his dissatisfaction publicly about signings.
Added to that, if you want Rodgers to stay on and extend his contract beyond 2026, then this isn’t the way to go about it.
But in life, patience is a virtue, and could it be a case that Celtic do their real transfer business very late in the window?
And could the reason behind the lack of real push in the market be because the Celtic board are waiting for the club to qualify for the Champions League?
“As much as you want your players in,” added Mulgrew.
“It’s about the balance of getting them at the right price. I agree, there has to be signings coming in. I don’t know why they are waiting. I imagine they are waiting to see what happens in the Champions League.”
