James McFadden slaps back at Kris Boyd’s rubbish about the Celtic board and Brendan Rodgers

It has been quite the summer for Celtic, the board, and the manager.

Unfortunately, given the goings-on at Celtic and the seemingly civil war off the field of play, it has generated a lot of noise and caught the media’s attention.

Of course, that was going to happen, but it shouldn’t allow nonsense to be spouted by certain individuals on matters relating to Brendan Rodgers and the board.

Nobody does that any better than Kris Boyd, but thankfully, James McFadden was on hand to set him straight on the nonsense he is coming out with.

James McFadden shuts down Kris Boyd suggesting Celtic board shouldn’t have backed Brendan Rodgers

Following Celtic’s win at Kilmarnock over the weekend, discussions on Sky Sports turned to off-field matters, especially given that Hoops supporters protested at Rugby Park.

Everyone knows the 2025 summer transfer window was a mess, but Boyd questioned why the Celtic board should have turned around and given Rodgers ‘more money’ to spend because he could leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Rodgers hasn’t been offered a new deal by the club, this was mentioned by Boyd, yet he criticised the Celtic manager for not committing to his future.

But McFadden told him, ‘it doesn’t matter who the manager is’, whatever you think has or hasn’t happened, Celtic ‘needed players’ in the summer, especially replacements for the big names that left.

Boyd: “You have got to praise them (the Celtic board) for not selling Daizen Maeda.”

McFadden: “They sold one before they got into the Champions League (Kyogo).”

Boyd: “If he (Rodgers) isn’t going to commit his future, whether Celtic offers him a contract or not, why would you spend a fortune, with the players he wants? Once again, by the way, the £11 million man of last summer, on the bench and not even coming on. The £3.5 million of Paulo Bernardo is not seen either.”

Chris Sutton: “You’re wheeling out the same rhetoric. We are talking about what has happened this season, and Celtic’s inability, in the last few months, to replace the quality.”

Boyd: “Why would the Celtic board turn around and give someone, who has spent an absolute fortune, more money to spend if he is potentially going to leave?”

McFadden: “It doesn’t matter who the manager is; they need players. There have been players who have left, and they need replacing. No matter who the manager is.

“The point is, they should have gone in ahead of it. Planned and got the players in as early as possible. They have now come off the back of it; they are chasing it. They are now going to be chasing the situation with the manager, because he is out of contract. That’s up in the air.

“No matter who the manager is, Celtic needed to sign players earlier in the transfer window.”

What has Rodgers said about his Celtic contract?

Whilst Boyd might try to bring Rodgers down, the man is making it clear that, put the right environment in place, and he is ‘100%’ open to staying.

That’s music to the ears of the Celtic fans, and now the changes need to be made at the top because fans would pick Rodgers over the board, plus the Irishman is better for the long-term future than those in suits.

“I would love to stay here longer,” Rodgers stated before the Killie match in his presser. “I’ve had informal chats with Dermot (Desmond) and Michael (Nicholson), but no offer to consider.”
