What is Celtic’s main priority for the January transfer window?

Everyone saw how incompetent the Celtic board were in the summer, and life isn’t exactly going to be easier in the winter.

Yes, Celtic’s back-to-back wins under Wilfried Nancy help matters, but there will be little time to work during the January transfer window, so the must-haves need to be dealt with first.

It could be argued that the absolute must-have is a striker, and Kris Boyd put forward Kyogo Furuhashi’s name, not only to score the goals, but also help Celtic from a defensive aspect.

Should Celtic re-sign Kyogo in January?

Kyogo Furuhashi under Wilfried Nancy at Celtic

It’s amazing, isn’t it? This time last season, Kyogo was leaving Celtic and joining Rennes in Ligue 1 to begin a new chapter in his career.

Fast forward to the present, and it has all gone horribly wrong. Now struggling at Birmingham City following his £10 million transfer in the summer, with only one goal to his name since he left Glasgow.

But speaking on Sky Sports Football, Boyd stated, ‘imagine’ a player like Kyogo in this Celtic side that is creating chances for fun under Nancy.

“When you look at Celtic, one thing they have had over a period of time is players who can put the ball into the net,” said Boyd.

“Whether that’s as a wide player or as a striker. We speak about having control. Celtic have killed teams off straightaway early on in games. All of a sudden, the panic is over, and they can go and play football.

“Teams sit back thinking, ‘this could be four or five before we get going because Celtic come out of the blocks.’

“There are a lot of deficiencies with Celtic’s defending. But I don’t think a lot of that would happen if they had somebody at the top end of the pitch who could just kill off the chances.

“Imagine a Kyogo in this team. You are talking about an Ange Postecoglou team. The chances he got, he scored them. You go right back through Celtic’s history. They have always had strikers who would score goals. Right now, that’s not the case.”

‘A lot of Celtic’s problems would disappear’

Boyd feels that if the champions of Scotland have that clinical goalscorer up front, a lot of the ‘deficiencies’ from a defensive aspect would go away because the game would be killed off.

There is a sense that Celtic can score a hatful of goals, but also concede as many as they are scoring.

“They are probably creating as many chances,” added Boyd. “Whether you look at a Celtic team and think, I don’t think they are at the levels Celtic teams have been in the past.

“But I don’t think the other teams in the league are at the level they have been in the past as well, so Celtic are still dominating games. They are still creating chances.

“For me, a lot of their problems would disappear if they found an out-and-out striker, who you can rely on to go and get 20-25 goals.”
