Celtic are putting together a transfer move for Royal Antwerp right-back Aurelio Buta after a move for Sheffield United’s George Baldock proved too difficult to progress with.

The Scottish Daily Mail reports a move for Buta is ‘taking shape’ after the Blades became too demanding in their negotiations regarding Baldock.

It had recently been reported that Baldock was the prime candidate to fill the right-back position, ahead of Sacha Boey who is off to Galatasaray.

Buta is a younger, more attacking option than the Englishman, but does have decent playing experience in Portugal and Belgium.

He emerged as a product of the Benfica academy before becoming a regular in an Antwerp team that reached the knockout stages of last season’s Europa League competition.

Celtic badly need a new option in the door to take the reins from Anthony Ralston, our current first-choice right-back.

Ralston isn’t the answer, as much as he tries, and the position is one of the glaring deficiencies in Ange Postecoglou’s current starting line-up.

Postecoglou has recently confirmed that the club are pursuing multiple targets concurrently in each position they want to strengthen. He was eager to reinforce that just because they could miss out on a player like Baldock, it doesn’t mean someone such as Buta should be seen as a ‘plan B’ option.

Buta looks to be a strong, exciting player ready to take the next step in his career. Hopefully, Celtic can delight the support and complete some right-back business this week.
