Andy Robertson’s dream return to Celtic won’t be happening.

The Scotland captain has officially found a new home after leaving Liverpool because he is now a Tottenham Hotspur player.

Robertson became a free agent this summer after nine years at Anfield, and there were suggestions, dating back to the previous campaign, that Celtic could secure his services.

Yes, Celtic have Kieran Tierney, but with reports that Marcelo Saracchi won’t return next season, you just sense that the champions of Scotland have missed a trick here.

Roberto De Zerbi, who was appointed in April and helped Spurs survive relegation on the last day of the season, is delighted by Robertson’s arrival.

From Celtic’s perspective, the Italian probably sums up why the Hoops should have pushed a little harder to try and bring him on board.

“I’m excited because he’s a Scottish player, first of all, and I love Scottish players,” said De Zerbi.

“Then he brings experience, mentality and qualities. And he’s a big player for us.

On why he loves Scottish players: “I don’t know. I worked with Billy Gilmour at Brighton. I love their mentality and their passion for football.”

Which players are likely to depart, given that Martin O’Neill will stay?

What has Andy Robertson said after his move to Tottenham?

At the age of 32, you sense that Robertson living his dream of playing for Celtic is probably now over – He has signed a contract at Spurs until 2028, with the option to extend it by 12 months.

But that doesn’t mean he won’t stop watching his boyhood club. Only last season, the all-action left-back was seen in the stands during a Europa League game at Parkhead.

Nonetheless, with Robertson preparing for the World Cup with Scotland, this is what he had to say to his new club once that move was confirmed.

“Hi Tottenham fans, it’s me, Andy Robertson, here,” said Robertson. “I am not in Glasgow. I am in America right now preparing for the World Cup.

“But I just wanted to send you a quick message to say that I cannot wait to play for you guys. I cannot wait to meet you guys. I cannot wait to play in the stadium in front of you, and I am already looking forward to next season.

“All the best, and I will see you soon.”
