Simon Donnelly reacts to Nicolas Kuhn’s arrival at Celtic, says what fans will be thinking

Simon Donnelly has welcomed Nicolas Kuhn as Celtic’s first signing of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old officially put pen to paper on his first Celtic contract on Tuesday, where he also met manager Brendan Rodgers and his new teammates.

With the versatile winger through the doors, he now has every chance of making his debut at the weekend against Buckie Thistle in the Scottish Cup.

Simon Donnelly feels the arrival of Nicolas Kuhn will ‘excite’ the supporters because it might just now open the floodgates for more new faces to come in, as he told Clyde 1.

The winter transfer window is past the halfway stage and it wouldn’t be a surprise if certain sections of the support are a little underwhelmed, at the moment.

If that’s the case, that’s fine, but the end judgment call should be made when the window officially slams shut.

Either way, with Nicolas Kuhn signed, the conversation flowed around the player having to showcase his worth pretty much straight away because of the competition around him.

Where does Nicolas Kuhn fit in at Celtic?

“It’s the first new face in,” said Donnelly. “I haven’t seen anything of the guy coming in from Rapid Vienna. He’s come through the ranks at Bayern Munich.

“It will be interesting to see. I have written down, Abada, Johnston, Tilio, Forrest, Maeda, Palma and Yang that play in that area. 

“He is going to have to come in and perform. Palma has, more or less, nailed down one of the positions on the team. Maeda is away. It’s an opportunity for him to come in and show what he has got. Time will tell if he’s going to go straight in.

“He is 24, so he is at an age where he should be fighting to get into that starting XI. He said there himself that he has big ambitions to enter the German national team and he feels this is a good move for him. 

“From a Celtic supporter’s point of view, they will be excited that’s the first new face in. They will be wanting a few more.”

Who starts for Celtic on the wings?

With Daizen Maeda away on international duty, Rodgers’ decision is probably made up for him.

You would say Luis Palma and Liel Abada are the main contenders, with the new boy then pushing them from behind.

This is Kuhn’s chance, by the time Maeda returns from the Asian Cup, to push straight in front of the manager’s plans.

The rest, from Hyunjun Yang to James Forrest, you just can’t see them being starters again for a long while yet.
