Celtic’s long-time interest in Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden is likely coming to an end this summer.

Kvistgaarden has been on the Celtic transfer shortlist since as far back as the summer of 2023 and in January, the Hoops made an enquiry to sign him.

But Brondby, despite receiving late bids, were determined to keep him for the rest of the season, and that is what transpired.

At the start of May, Eintracht Frankfurt joined Celtic in having a strong interest in Kvistgaarden, who scored 23 goals in 38 games last season.

He recently appeared to bid farewell to the Brondby fans having said he is ready to take the next step in his career.

But Celtic have been dealt a further blow in their pursuit of the frontman.

West Ham join Celtic in hunt to sign Mathias Kvistgaarden

It was bad enough news when it was reported Bundesliga side Frankfurt also want to recruit Kvistgaarden – but now a Premier League club have ‘entered the race’.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say West Ham United have been tracking Kvistgaarden and could launch a transfer bid over the coming weeks.

The report states that at least £12m will be required to prise Kvistgaarden away from Brondby after the forward was recently called up to the senior Denmark international squad.

West Ham have already inflicted pain on the Hoops with the agreed deal to sign Daniel Cummings for just £300k in compensation.

Brondby director of football on Kvistgaarden

Speaking after their final match of the season against AGF on Sunday, Brondby’s director of football Benjamin Schmedes intimated that no bids have been lodged for Kvistgaarden yet.

He said: “We will look at it when there is something on the table and we can talk about it. We don’t have that right now, so we are not saying goodbye to him yet.

“We will sit down and look at the season, and then we will see what the transfer window brings. That applies to Mathias and all the other players.

“He is an interesting player for the five major leagues. It is not without reason that he was named Player of the Year.

“There are many things that bigger clubs in the five major leagues could be interested in. I will answer the phone when they call, and then we will see.”
