‘Why isn’t it over the line’ – Andy Halliday shocked Celtic haven’t signed 11-goal winger

Celtic started with Daizen Maeda and Hyunjun Yang as the wide players against St Mirren on Sunday.

Some would argue that Maeda should play down the middle, and then there are doubts over Yang’s place in the Celtic side.

Either way, with Nicolas Kuhn out of the door, after joining Como during the 2025 summer transfer market, that out-and-out winger hasn’t been signed yet.

Many thought it would be Benjamin Nygren, but it seems as though Brendan Rodgers wants to use him as a number eight.

Wingers have been linked, plenty of them, but as Andy Halliday pointed out, they are not in the green and white colours.

Why haven’t Celtic signed Go Ahead Eagles winger Jakob Breum?

One man whose name has been doing the rounds is Go Ahead Eagles winger Jakob Breum, who has already started the new campaign.

But Halliday questioned on Open Goal why Breum hasn’t been signed yet because Celtic have been linked with the 11-goal winger ‘for ages.’

The slow and frustrating nature of Celtic’s transfer window has been a hot topic, and Halliday summed up the areas that haven’t been filled, even though it has been obvious for some while now.

“Very surprising with how slow it has been,” stated Halliday. “The reason it’s surprising to me is that it’s areas you felt at the end of last season, Celtic needed to strengthen.

“You knew they needed a backup left-back. Loads of people felt that they needed a left-sided centre-half. They needed to replace Kyogo. They are the areas they knew even before this season kicked off. The fact that they haven’t done that yet, I do find surprising.

“The boy that they have been linked, the boy from Go Ahead Eagles, Jakob Breum. I feel like they have been linked with him for ages, so why isn’t that over the line? Why hasn’t that been done? The rest has been slow.”

Brendan Rodgers’ future impacting Celtic transfers?

It is well-documented that Rodgers is in his final 12 months of his Celtic contract, so could that be an issue in signing players?

Nobody is the wiser, not even the Celtic manager himself, on whether he will sign a new deal and extend his stay in Glasgow.

But Halliday thinks that shouldn’t be an issue for players coming in and wanting to play for Celtic.

Si Ferry asked: “Does Rodgers’ future matter on that point?”

Halliday responded: “It shouldn’t. They have got a full season. You have got Champions League. You have got another league to win. For me, it shouldn’t come into the equation.”
