Michael Stewart says he wasn’t the ‘biggest fan’ of one of Celtic’s most expensive transfer exits ever

Michael Stewart has admitted that he wasn’t a big fan of former Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

Kuhn joined the Hoops in January 2024 from Rapid Wien and went on to make 69 appearances for the club in a year and a half.

He scored 24 goals and provided 18 assists, most of which came at the start of last season when he was easily the best player in Scotland by Christmas.

Kuhn’s form dipped as the season went on, but Celtic still managed to make a whopping profit on the winger from Italian side Como.

Stewart wasn’t a massive fan of ex-Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn

Como paid an initial £16.5m to land Kuhn last month and the German thus became the fourth most expensive Celtic transfer export of all time.

However, despite that and the 42 goal involvements in 69 Celtic games, Premier Sports pundit Stewart could never take to Kuhn.

He now wants Celtic to use the Kuhn cash on a quality striker, with the clock now ticking down towards the September 1 deadline.

Stewart told the Scottish Football Social Club: “When you look at Celtic at the moment, the squad was weaker than it was last season, for a number of reasons obviously.

“Kyogo went in January, you brought in Jota which I thought was great business. Jota’s injured, Kuhn’s been sold. And I’ll be honest, I wasn’t the biggest Kuhn fan which you may well have realised.

“But the point remains, you sold and made good money on him, and the expectation was that you would sign a big, main striker. And they’ve not done that yet.”

Who will replace Kuhn at Celtic?

Celtic fans are growing increasingly concerned that Kuhn’s replacement has not been signed and the close of the window is fast approaching.

The Hoops have the cash, there’s no doubt, but the board currently seem reluctant to allow Brendan Rodgers to spend big on the targets he wants.

Jota is also injured for the longer term, as Stewart alludes to, so two wingers are needed ideally before September 1.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha from Royal Antwerp could be one, but Celtic’s talks with the Belgian club are either dragging on into eternity or have failed altogether.

Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum is also on Celtic’s shortlist, but several lowball bids have been turfed out by the Dutch side.

They want £5m for Breum, so it’s up to the Celtic hierarchy to decide whether that money can be justified.
