Callum McGregor shares what Brendan Rodgers told him on the pitch after Celtic’s Scottish Cup final loss

It has been the year of the underdog, and that continued in Glasgow as Aberdeen beat Celtic on penalties in the Scottish Cup final.

Less than a fortnight ago, Celtic put five goals past the Dons at Pittodrie, and that was with a team that was much-changed by Brendan Rodgers.

Added to that, Celtic had won the double, and many were backing them to secure that ultimate Treble, but a resilient Aberdeen had other ideas.

With a changed formation, Jimmy Thelin’s men took Celtic to extra time, before scoring all of their penalties, and then going on to lift the Scottish Cup.

Callum McGregor missed his spot kick, alongside Alistair Johnston, and when the game had concluded, he looked dejected on the field of play and was consoled by his manager.

What Brendan Rodgers told Callum McGregor after Celtic’s Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen

It just goes to show what it means to McGregor to represent Celtic because, even with two trophies in the bag this season, he is heartbroken like he has won nothing.

But McGregor told PLZ Soccer that Rodgers told him to ‘keep your head up’, and also reminded him of how he has done ‘so much for the club’.

The Celtic manager couldn’t have put it perfectly because, without him, Celtic wouldn’t be so trophy-dominant.

“He just said, ‘it can happen to anyone’,” said McGregor. “It’s obviously a personal moment. But the gist of it was to ‘keep your head up’ and ‘you have done so much for the club’. And had ‘so much success for the club’.

“And he is obviously to be there for you, in that moment.”

McGregor’s numbers speak for themselves

Celtic have become so dominant that winning a double is seen as a huge disappointment. Remember who the champions of Scotland are.

One man who has been at the heart of it is McGregor, and nobody can, or will, question his commitment to the cause.
