Kris Boyd states what Celtic duo Greg Taylor and Luke McCowan did isn’t the norm now

Celtic had to fight hard for a point against Dundee on Tuesday night.

Even though Luke McCowan opened the scoring after five minutes and Celtic took the lead twice, in the end, it was the champions wrestling back a point thanks to an Arne Engels stoppage-time penalty.

Brendan Rodgers has chopped and changed his XI over the festive period to contend with the heavy schedule, injuries and illness to players.

That has included McCowan being in and out of the side, with many thinking and feeling that he should now be starting alongside Callum McGregor on a regular basis.

The manner in which he took his goal at Dens Park was outstanding, even though McCowan decided against celebrating against his former club.

The cross from Greg Taylor should also be applauded, as Kris Boyd explained why he was reluctantly glad to see those two combine.

It’s the norm for Taylor to hop into midfield and run the show. It’s a reason why he is so popular with the manager and why Rodgers wants him to sign a new deal.

In this instance, Taylor played a brilliant cross towards the far post and McCowan guided it back to where it came from and it hit the back of the net.

Boyd stated that it isn’t the norm for two Scottish players to combine like that for Celtic because of ‘the impact of overseas players’, as he told Sky Sports News (15/01/25 at 10:25 am).

“What a header that was,” said Boyd about McCowan’s goal. “Two Scottish players connecting for Celtic. Something we haven’t seen a lot recently because of the impact of overseas players.”

Should McCowan start more games for Celtic?

Taylor is a regular starter and that won’t change, although, Kieran Tierney coming into the building might change that.

But should McCowan be another Scottish player starting alongside McGregor and Taylor? His performances since joining state that he should.

Not forgetting that Celtic have some huge games coming up, mainly in the Champions League, and you sense McCowan should be starting.
