Who will be regarded as Celtic’s best player from this current crop?

Right now, not many can step forward because Brendan Rodgers’ side aren’t playing anywhere near their best.

But over the course of recent years, Celtic have dominated on the domestic stage, including narrowly missing out on the Treble last term.

Andy Halliday has faced Celtic on several occasions, including currently in the colours of Motherwell.

And he has made his feelings clear about Reo Hatate amid the negative noise around him.

Andy Halliday on Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor’s current Celtic form

Speaking on Open Goal, Halliday wanted to make it clear that Hatate is ‘the best player in the league.’

However, he thinks the Japan star, alongside his captain Callum McGregor, aren’t performing at their best right now.

Halliday was an unused substitute as Celtic beat his Motherwell side in stoppage time over the weekend, and this is what he had to say about the midfield duo.

“You guys know what I think of certain players,” said Halliday. “Celtic have some very, very good players.

“I think Hatate, I have said for ages, I think he is the best player in the league. Callum McGregor has arguably been the best player in Scotland for five, six or seven years.

“They just are not at the level now, at all.”

McGregor and Hatate’s numbers

There are some calls for Hatate to be dropped, and others calling for Brendan Rodgers to axe McGregor.

Either way, they aren’t performing to their usual high standards, and it has played a part in Celtic’s abject performances in all competitions this season.

If it continues after the October international break, then Rodgers has to do something because that bite is missing.
