As Wilfried Nancy struggles at Celtic, Columbus Crew make managerial decision

Wilfried Nancy’s struggles at Celtic continue this week as fans appear to be getting to the end of their tether with the former Columbus Crew boss.

Nancy felt the full wrath of the Hoops support after Celtic lost at Motherwell to record his fifth defeat in seven games since his arrival in Glasgow.

The Celtic boss’ post-match Motherwell comments were simply baffling and make the Frenchman’s position at the club look even more untenable.

But as Celtic appear to be set to dig their heels in to give Nancy more time, Columbus Crew have now moved on from the Frenchman as they make their own managerial appointment for the New Year.

Columbus Crew move on from Nancy and replace Celtic boss with Henrik Rydström

There were plenty of Columbus Crew fans who were gutted that Nancy left the MLS club for Celtic as the Frenchman moved on to a bigger club.

As fans raged online, there were plenty of them who declared that they would happily take the 49-year-old coach back.

Well, that’s not going to happen now as Crew appoint Swede Henrik Rydström, as their new head coach in an announcement late last night on social media.

Taking over from Nancy, Rydström said on Columbus Crew’s official website, “I’m excited to coach the Crew and thank the Haslam, Johnson and Edwards families, Issa, Marc and the entire team for the opportunity to join the Club.

“After every meeting with Crew leadership, the feeling continued to grow that this Club is special and something that you want to be part of.

“As a coach, you love the Crew’s playing style and how the players enjoy it, the focus on hard work and the Club’s passionate supporters.

“Our goal is to continue to build upon the team’s impressive success and attacking style while combining the desire to win with challenging ourselves every day to improve and to create joy for the team and supporters.”

Will Nancy change his tactical style for the Celtic vs Rangers fixture?

Nancy is failing at Celtic. This is a cold, hard fact. No matter what the Hoops boss says about him seeing improvements, the fans certainly don’t.

There was a glimmer of the style of football Nancy was looking to bring to Celtic in the wins against Livingston and Aberdeen but, in truth, that vanished at Fir Park midweek.

Will Nancy have the foresight to change Celtic’s set-up for the visit of Rangers? Unfortunately, we don’t believe so.

Celtic’s high line of defence will get caught out against the Ibrox club, and when they do it, they will punish any mistakes, despite them being so poor themselves.

So while Celtic fans may hope that Nancy sees sense and starts playing players in positions they are more comfortable and strongest in, the Glasgow Derby looks like it is going to be a tough watch this New Year.
