While Argentina was knocking out England at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday, clubs across Europe were building up to their new season by playing friendly matches.

Stade de Reims are in France’s second tier, and Celtic supporters would usually have no interest in the French club.

But given that Celtic are interested in Stade de Reims midfielder Mory Gbane, it slightly changes matters.

Reims played Belgian club Royal Francs Borains in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, winning 4-1, with their sought-after midfielder absent from the game.

Mory Gbane absent from Stade de Reims’ pre-season friendly

Stade de Reims posted on social media two XI’s that featured in their second pre-season friendly of the summer – none of which featured Gbane.

Now, no reason has been provided for his absence, but it does make things interesting from Celtic’s perspective.

What’s even more interesting is that Gbane did start pre-season with Reims.

While Celtic were in Ireland last week opening their pre-season account against Shelbourne, Stade de Reims were playing RC Sporting Charleroi.

The duo played out a score draw, but what’s interesting is that Gbane featured in the match.

Therefore, in the coming days, don’t be surprised if more news starts to emerge about Gbane because, unless he is injured, there must be something bubbling around his future.
