Charlie Mulgrew refuses to change his mind on Adam Idah despite outside noise on Celtic star

Adam Idah is already feeling the heat, and that’s only after one game this season.

But that’s the pressure of playing for a club like Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers’ side beating St Mirren 1-0 on Flag Day, and for the opening fixture of the 2025/26 Premiership season.

Yes, there aren’t exactly forward players lining up and knocking on the door, but Idah started up front against St Mirren, and he played around 78 minutes before being replaced by Johnny Kenny.

The Republic of Ireland star did hit the woodwork during the game, but that matters very little to the Celtic fans criticising Idah because he failed to score, and the 2025 summer transfer window is wide open.

Charlie Mulgrew on Adam Idah after Celtic beat St Mirren

There aren’t many people defending Idah, you expect his manager to do so, and that happened pre and post the St Mirren match.

Before a ball was kicked this season, Charlie Mulgrew stated that Idah will be ‘top scorer’ in the Premiership this season, and he isn’t backing away from those thoughts.

Speaking on Go Radio, Mulgrew is still backing Idah to have a ‘good season’, even though he thinks that another forward player needs to arrive before the September 1 transfer deadline.

“Forward players are needed quickly,” said Mulgrew. “I think forward players that are going to make you that difference, and get you the results.

“Idah was fine against St Mirren. I still think it will be a good season for Idah. But he had a couple of chances. A couple of headers. He had that volley, didn’t he? He did the real hard work, and he hit the post. Unlucky.”

How Idah rated for Celtic against St Mirren

WhoScored handed Idah a rating of 6.13 for his performance against St Mirren, and he is going to seriously need to up that if he wants to silence the doubters.

Yes, the Irishman hit the woodwork, but he wasn’t clinical when it mattered most, and you know the cries will be for Daizen Maeda to move up top.

Another issue for Idah is that he needs to get involved a lot more in the general play of the game, especially when he has his back to goal, but right now, he is the starting striker.
