Gordon Dalziel reacts to the suggestion that investor Tony Bloom can help Hearts overthrow Celtic

There could be many changes across the Scottish Premiership this summer, as Celtic continue to win all the trophies on the domestic stage.

Celtic will win the Treble if they beat Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final, and clubs like Rangers and Hearts could have some money pumped into them.

There has been a lot of talk around the San Francisco 49ers taking over Rangers, whilst Brighton owner Tony Bloom is looking to invest in Hearts, after taking the south coast side from the lower leagues of English football and into Europe.

The Edinburgh club recently sacked Neil Critchley as their manager after losing the Scottish Cup semi-final to Aberdeen and finishing outside of the top six.

But, come the summer, it could be all change, with a new manager, including new investment from a man who has helped completely transform clubs, from top to bottom.

That’s why Celtic’s dominance, including no one winning the title outside of the Glasgow duo since the 80s, was brought into the equation on Open Goal when discussing Bloom’s expected investment into Hearts.

Can Tony Bloom help Hearts overthrow Celtic and become champions?

Last season, Celtic weren’t at their best, yet they still won the double in Rodgers’ first season of his second spell in charge.

But during this campaign, aside from a few bad patches in 2025, the champions of Scotland have looked a cut above the rest.

The talk of Bloom, who also took Union Saint-Gilloise from the second-tier to now sitting top of the Belgian Pro League, was also discussed amid his expected investment in Hearts and what he can do in Scotland.

Si Ferry shared: “It has been reported that Tony Bloom is looking to invest £9.86m in a share of 29% in Hearts. He needs a majority vote from the Foundation of Hearts: 8,000 members.”

“Hearts look at themselves as the third biggest team in Scotland,” stated Gordon Dalziel. “But Hearts have had a terrible season, so they need a bit of investment in there. They need a new way of going forward. Get the right coach, manager or whatever you want to do. They need to be up in the top six.

Could Hearts win the league under Bloom? “Absolutely no chance,” responded Dalziel. “No chance. No chance. I think they will be in the top three. But I don’t think they will split Rangers and Celtic. Or Celtic and Rangers. Whatever way.

“Celtic are getting stronger and better. Look at what they will do in the summer. Rangers, with new investment, for Rangers fans, they will hope to go forward.”

Ferry then claimed: “Am I right in saying that he (Bloom) took Brighton from League One to the top six in the Premier League?

“Surely, is that not a harder achievement than taking Hearts to the Premier League title?! With the amount of money that teams in England spend.”

Will anyone win the Premiership title in this lifetime outside of Celtic and Rangers?

Outside of Scotland, critics used to give a lot of heat to the Premiership because the only two winners would be either Celtic or Rangers.

But in the last 15 years, Celtic have won 14 titles, so those critics will be crying even more at the sheer scale of dominance from Scotland’s most successful club.

The Open Goal panel, including Derek Ferguson, were asked if anyone outside of Glasgow can win the title in their lifetime.

“In my lifetime? It’s easy to say,” joked 63-year-old Dalziel. “In the next five years? Absolutely no chance they will beat Celtic or Rangers. Not a chance.

“There would have to be some overturn. Forget Rangers, because we don’t know what the investment is and how Rangers will go. But to overturn Celtic right now, the way Celtic are going?!”

Derek Ferguson also added: “When was the last time somebody outside of Celtic or Rangers won it? Was it Aberdeen back in the day? Was it, aye?! That shows you how difficult it is.

“It’s even an achievement to split Celtic and Rangers. That would be an achievement.”
