Kris Boyd fires shots, as he sends Celtic warning to Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen

It’s going to be interesting to see what type of XI Brendan Rodgers puts out when Celtic take on Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Wednesday night.

Celtic have the Premiership title secured, so the manager can make changes at his will, especially with the team playing three games in a week, including against St Mirren this Saturday lunchtime.

Over the weekend, Celtic beat Hibernian, despite going a goal behind through Martin Boyle, but the same can’t be said for Aberdeen.

Jimmy Thelin’s side, who are sitting fourth in the Premiership table, and are now at risk of losing third spot to Hibs, were thrashed by Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday.

That doesn’t bode well for Aberdeen, ahead of their two matches against the champions of Scotland, including the Scottish Cup final on May 24 at Hampden.

Kris Boyd fires warning to Aberdeen about Celtic ahead of Scottish Cup final

Rewind back to the start of the campaign, and Thelin was making a name for himself because Aberdeen had made a storming start to the league.

There was even talk of Aberdeen challenging Celtic for the title, but then they hit a massive brick wall, and now they are at risk of finishing fifth.

But, following their latest showing at Ibrox, Kris Boyd warned Thelin and his players about ‘how many’ they could get beaten by Celtic for the cup final, as he told Sky Sports Football (11/05/25).

“Then you are looking at it, for the start that Aberdeen had, yes, they have got to a final, and the other semi-final (League Cup),” said Boyd.

“But, if they finish fifth (in the Premiership), you then start to ask questions, has it been a successful season for them?

“If they play like what they played at Ibrox, against Celtic, then it’s going to be a question of ‘how many’.

“For Aberdeen, even in years gone by, there was a fight and determination, even if they weren’t playing well. The players maybe aren’t at the level of the individuals in this team, but it was still a hard game. You still had to fight for everything. I don’t really see that with Aberdeen right now. I don’t.

“Jimmy Thelin has a lot of work from now until the cup final, if he is going to get a successful result in that.”

Celtic’s head-to-head record against Aberdeen

Celtic have already beaten Aberdeen at Hampden, and it was a thumping win for the League Cup semi-final in November, so the Treble-chasers will want to rewrite that moment.

Of course, you expect the Dons to come out fighting even harder this time, but with Celtic looking for that Treble, you can’t look past them.

Plus, in the overall picture, the Hoops’ record against Aberdeen is pretty strong, as posted by Transfermarkt.
