Where do Celtic go from here?
Right now, Wilfried Nancy is still the Celtic manager, even though the majority of the fanbase was baying for his blood on Saturday afternoon.
It was another dark day for Celtic, and unfortunately, there have been far too many of them in recent times, and the temperature is beyond boiling point.
There has been a lot of noise following Celtic’s defeat to Rangers, which was Nancy’s sixth in eight matches, and Henry Winter hit the nail on the head regarding the club’s current situation.
If Wilfried Nancy was to be sacked, who would you want to become the next Celtic manager?
Henry Winter on the Celtic board replacing Martin O’Neill with Wilfried Nancy
The Celtic board were already public enemy number one with the fans, and this Nancy reign has just made matters worse.
English journalist and reporter Henry Winter noted O’Neill’s interim spell in charge, and how well he did during a short period of time following the dark ending of Brendan Rodgers’ reign.
Winter questioned why the Hoops didn’t just keep O’Neill on board ‘until the summer’, and then made a call from there.
But whilst Nancy argues that one reason behind why he is losing so many matches is that he didn’t have a pre-season.
Winter also wanted to point out that ‘O’Neill didn’t have a pre-season either’, yet he managed to get much more out of this group of players.
‘Martin O’Neill: 8 games, 7 wins, 1 defeat,’ wrote Winter. ‘Wilfried Nancy: 8 games, 2 wins, 6 defeats.
‘O’Neill didn’t have a pre-season to prepare either, although of course he knows the club, standards, expectations, culture, etc.
‘His Celtic fought. Nancy’s Celtic collapsed second half v Rangers (having dominated the first). Issues with board predate Nancy, but he’s obviously struggling. Painful to see, it can’t go on.
‘When a team collapses like that, it’s far deeper than individual mistakes; it’s often a collective lack of belief in the manager.
‘Why didn’t the board ask MON to look after the team until the summer and then appoint a permanent head coach from a stronger list of candidates?
‘Surely that’s the sensible decision to make now. Celtic are a huge club, passionately supported, and they need appointments that reflect their size.’
