John Hartson completely disagrees with possible SPFL call that would affect Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic

It has been another successful season for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, but it’s what everyone expected.

A lot still needs to be done, the final set of games, which is away at St Johnstone on Sunday before the split and then getting those trophies in the cabinet.

As of this moment, Celtic are sitting on 119 trophies – no side in the history of Scottish football has more – and a 55th Premiership title is also incoming.

But, in these coming years, things could change for Celtic, especially if the SPFL change how the whole league itself is structured.

As of this moment, it’s a 12-man league, with St Johnstone sitting bottom and the usual suspects showing everyone how it should be done.

But change could be coming around the corner, and Rodgers might have to go down different roads to achieve the club’s targets.

Celtic hero John Hartson wants SPFL expansion

Nothing has been decided yet, not even the clubs have been consulted or gone through a vote, but it has been suggested that the SPFL could push for a ten-man league.

That is something John Hartson is against because he would prefer a ’16 team’ league because the current set-up is ‘mundane’.

When Hartson first joined Celtic in 2001, under the legendary manager Martin O’Neill, that’s when the Premiership turned into a 12-man league, but now the former striker feels there are enough ‘big clubs’ in the lower divisions to make it work, as he told Go Radio.

“I think it can become mundane at times,” responded Hartson about the current 12-man league. “I think the fact that, sometimes, you play the top six four times, and the only reason you stop that is by adding more teams to the top league here in Scotland.

“Say, for instance, you put another four teams in there. I think there are enough big clubs in the Championship to compete. I really do. We can go through them, if you like. The ones that we feel that come up and down for most seasons, if you like.

“If you look at 16 teams, that’s 30 league games, then maybe you play each other home and away, then the top six will play each other one more time. That’s what I would prefer.

“It gives, not smaller clubs, but more of a chance to play against the top teams in the league. That’s what I would like to see.”

League expansion would be a boost for a Celtic legend

Celtic might be walking towards the league, but it has been far tighter and much more of a battle in the Championship up until these final few weeks.

It now looks like Falkirk, who are eight points clear of Scott Brown’s Ayr United, should earn promotion back to the big time.

But, if the league was expanded, then it would provide the chance for Celtic legend Brown to take those extra places in the Premiership and benefit from an expansion, rather than make life harder if the league was reduced further.

And, let’s be honest, that would be far more entertaining.
