Callum Osmand turned into an instant fan favourite after the Celtic striker scored against Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup.

The young Celtic striker looked like his Hoops career had seriously stalled under Brendan Rodgers, but since Martin O’Neill arrived at the Parkhead club, Osmand has flourished.

Scoring his first-ever Celtic goal in the Rangers win at Hampden in the Premier Sports Cup, Osmand was pitched in against FC Midtjylland for his European debut.

The Welshman’s impact was immediate as Osmand’s pace caused the Danes a lot of issues as the Celtic striker won a penalty in the second half.

However, after Osmand picked up a hamstring injury, Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has shared what he said to the ‘distraught’ young Hoops striker in the dressing room after the game.

Martin O’Neill’s class words of comfort to Celtic striker Callum Osmand

Osmand faces a good few weeks out as he recovers from his injury but it’s clear that Celtic boss O’Neill knew just how to pick up his grief-stricken striker after the game.

O’Neill told BBC Radio Scotland, “I’ve said to him, ‘Listen, you were starting to get going, this is just a setback for you.

‘But it’s not terminal in that sense, and you can fight back. You’ll be out for X number of weeks now’, and it is a shame because he was trying to make an impression, but that’s it.”

Martin O’Neill sends a message to Celtic fringe players after Callum Osmand’s injury

Osmand’s injury leaves Celtic light in the striker department with Kelechi Iheanacho still on the sidelines injured at the moment.

And it seems that O’Neill has sent out a rallying call to his Celtic fringe players ahead of the Kilmarnock game on Sunday.

O’Neill continued, “We definitely have a bit of a problem with it, but that’s the nature.

“If somebody has to step up, you know, then that’s the name of the game.

“So, yeah. But we just have to, we have to find a way.”
