The SPFA Player of the Year Awards was held the night Celtic drew with Rangers at Ibrox.
The final Glasgow Derby of the season ended in a stalemate after Adam Idah’s second-half Celtic strike earned the Hoops a draw at Ibrox.
Celtic’s draw with Rangers means that after five fixtures between both clubs, Brendan Rodgers has won two, Barry Ferguson one with the final game ending in a draw.
With the results between the two clubs even, that led to chatter at the SPFA Player of the Year awards about the gap between Celtic and Rangers and here, Michael Stewart shares what was said at the glamour event.

Michael Stewart sends grim message to Rangers about Celtic
Stewart attended the event on Sunday night and watched Daizen Maeda pick up the Player of the Year award for his Celtic exploits this season.
However, the chat turned to Celtic & Rangers and Stewart rejects what some people at the awards were saying about the current gap between the two clubs.
Stewart told The Scottish Football Social Club, “The other glaring issue is quite clearly they need greater quality in the team if they’re going to compete with Celtic over a full season.
“And at the moment that is a big task. Talking to a few folk last night and some people think it’s not as big a gap as others. It’s a big gap.
“They need to really strengthen a lot of that squad and at the same time they need to hope that Celtic lose some players, have an absolute nightmare in the transfer window and that some of their key players next season don’t even compete at the level you would expect
“It’s a big gap that needs to be bridged and I don’t see it happening just next season. It is something that will need to take time.”
Celtic’s success is unrivalled
Celtic’s trophy history is unrivalled to any other club in the country. After being officially crowned Scotland’s most successful club after beating Rangers in the League Cup final, the Parkhead club have since sealed another title.
- 55 time Scottish Premiership champions
- 42 time Scottish Cup holders
- 33 time League Cup winners
Rodgers has a chance to build on that success if Celtic beat Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final this month.
Stewart is right, the gap is huge and it’s only going to increase.
