Celtic will have a new centre-back to select from against Falkirk.

Stephen Welsh has returned to Celtic after being recalled from his loan spell at Motherwell.

The 25-year-old has impressed at Fir Park, forming part of a defence that has the Steelmen challenging at the top end of the Scottish Premiership table.

Welsh could play against Falkirk on Wednesday night and the decision to bring him back to Glasgow came just in time due to a looming deadline.

Defence has been a huge issue for the Hoops this season, particularly when it comes to right-sided centre-backs.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ season-ending injury means that the left-footed Auston Trusty has been playing there.

Dane Murray hasn’t been considered and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey left to join Koln, leaving them with two options: sign someone or bring back Welsh.

According to The Herald, Martin O’Neill had until Wednesday 14 January to recall the 25-year-old, otherwise he would have had to remain at Motherwell until the end of the season.

What now for Stephen Welsh?

The decision to recall Welsh after seemingly being deemed surplus to requirements in the summer seems bizarre.

Only a few days before, Welsh said he was loving life at Motherwell, but now finds himself going back from automatic starter to competing for his place in the team.

Does he come back in, or does he have to bide his time?
