Viljami Sinisalo shares how Kasper Schmeichel has been with him since Celtic number one’s injury

It has been an interesting few weeks for Celtic goalkeepers.

The mixed emotions between Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo would have been night and day.

Schmeichel suffered an injury on international duty and that has disrupted his debut campaign in Glasgow, especially with Celtic pushing for the Treble.

It remains to be seen whether or not he will return to action before the final ball is kicked at the end of the season, but there is a chance.

Whilst Schmeichel would have been feeling low because of his injury, there would have been pure happiness from the man behind him in the pecking order.

The simple reason is that, after Sinisalo made his Celtic debut in the Scottish Cup in February, he made his league debut for the champions-elect against Hearts last week.

Viljami Sinisalo shares Kasper Schmeichel’s help following his injury

At the age of 38, Schmeichel isn’t just Celtic’s number one, but he is proving to be a great mentor to the man coming up.

Sinisalo shared that, during Schmeichel’s injury, the Dane has been ‘great with me’ and helped him get comfortable with the number one gloves.

The 23-year-old also stated that he has been asking a lot of questions on the training pitch, and he feels that is the way to go if he wants to learn, as he told Sky Sports Football (06/04/25 at 12:05 pm).

“He has been great with me,” shared Sinisalo. “Little tips that you get. Little things that he has obviously seen during his football career that I can learn from.

“I want to become the best that I can possibly. That comes with asking questions. I don’t think, especially on the training field, you can’t ask too many. We are all here to learn and be better. We are pushing each other to help each other to do the best we can.”

Sinisalo shares a blunt message about Celtic’s number one goalkeeping spot

Sinisalo was highly-rated at Aston Villa, and the Premier League side didn’t want to let him go, even though they have a World Cup winner, Emiliano Martinez, as their main guy.

But the Finland international took a risk moving to Celtic, but his objectives and mindset are pretty clear.

Sinisalo explained how he wants to be ‘number one’ and he has now made it his ‘dream’ ever since he put on the Celtic colours.

“It’s quite simple, I want to be Celtic’s number one,” added Sinisalo. “Hopefully, with that comes responsibility with Finland as well and becoming Finland’s number one.

“But that’s always been my dream. My dream is now to become Celtic’s number one and be consistently good for a long period of time. That’s always been the main, and that’s been the aim since I came to this football club.”
