Celtic’s need for additions in the January window has never been so stark after the recent run of results and performances.
Wilfried Nancy’s new Celtic system is simply not working with the players the Hoops boss has at his disposal.
After Celtic signed Julian Araujo this week, Nancy will be looking to make further additions to his team to allow his system to function properly.
And as Celtic’s scouts (hopefully) scour the globe, there is a player who was right under Wilfried Nancy’s nose that the Parkhead club could have signed for just £2m, who has been labelled ‘one of the best left backs in MLS history’.

Wilfried Nancy should have brought Kai Wagner to Celtic
Celtic have a left-back problem and that is compounded with Kieran Tierney’s fitness issues and the injury to Marcelo Saracchi.
However, it appears that a long-term fix could have been applied to that if Nancy had just raided the MLS to get Kai Wagner who has just made his next move for just £2m.
And the left-back was given some superb praise from Mexican journalist José Roberto Nuñez who covers Wagner’s club Philadelphia Union.
Nunez said on X, “The Philadelphia Union are finalising a deal to transfer Kai Wagner to Championship side Birmingham City.
“Wagner, 28, has made 253 appearances for the Union across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 54 assists over 22,134 minutes.
“One of the best left backs in MLS history on the verge of a European move.”
Wagner signed for Kyogo Furuhashi’s Birmingham City in a deal said to be worth around £2m.
Kai Wagner would have been perfect for Celtic
Celtic need an experienced left-back to fit into Nancy’s system to challenge Kieran Tierney long-term. While Saracchi was a perfect short-term solution, the Uruguayan is likely to return to Boca Juniors at the end of the season.
Wagner’s Fotmob stats from last season show that not only is he a potent attacking threat, he is also solid defensively.
- Tackles: 97
- Duels won: 210
- Duels won %: 63.8%
- Aerial duels won: 54
- Aerial duels won %: 65.9%
- Interceptions: 46
- Ball recoveries: 177
- Goals: 2
- Assists: 10
The German now embarks on a career in England’s second-tier where, hopefully, he can help Celtic hero Kyogo Furuhashi to end his current goal-drought.
