Why Newcastle United’s £55m transfer deal could have Celtic fans watching on nervously

Celtic fans are expecting at least three or four new faces to arrive at Parkhead before the 11pm transfer deadline tonight.

Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of the fact that the Celtic first-team needs strengthening after he watched the Bhoys’ draw with Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday.

The Celtic boss saw his team fail to record a single shot on Rangers’ goal in the first 45 minutes of the Ibrox stalemate.

Reinforcements to Celtic’s attacking line clearly need to be brought in but it’s a £55m transfer Newcastle United have just sealed that will leave the Hoops support sweating on transfer deadline day.

Why Newcastle United’s £55m deal for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa could leave Celtic fans sweating

The Guardian reports that Newcastle United are said to have agreed a £55m deal to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa today.

The DR Congo international striker was in sensational form for the Premier League club last season scoring 20 goals in 39 games for Brentford.

Now on his way to Newcastle, the signing could open the door for Brentford to renew their interest in Celtic striker Daizen Maeda.

Maeda caught Brentford’s eye back in July and were said to be weighing up a bid for Celtic’s Player of the Year.

However, 67 Hail Hail rubbished those rumours after contacting journalist Graeme Bailey who said that those ‘high up’ at Brentford are not interested in the Celtic striker.

However, this latest development could reignite that interest with Maeda looking increasingly out of form at Celtic.

Daizen Maeda has been integral to Celtic’s successes since his Parkhead move in December 2021.
