Celtic ‘reservations’ over Mathias Kvistgaarden revealed as transfer interest in Brondby striker ‘dropped’

It’s a long-running transfer link that has finally come to an end.

Celtic were first interested in signing Brondby striker and Denmark international Mathias Kvistgaarden in the summer of 2023 when a £4m bid was rejected.

The Hoops approached Brondby once again in January 2024, but their manager at the time Jesper Sorensen effectively explained that the club were not prepared to sell their best players mid-season.

Speculation quietened last summer, but rumours ramped up again when 67 Hail Hail revealed Celtic scouts had watched Kvistgaarden in November.

Celtic and Brondby then entered into transfer talks during the most recent January window. However, discussions broke down when the Dane was valued at £10m.

Naturally, links to Kvistgaarden resurfaced in recent weeks with West Ham United and Eintracht Frankfurt joining the hunt to sign the highly-rated 23-year-old.

But now, after almost two years of Kvistgaarden to Celtic speculation, the Hoops have reportedly taken him off their summer shortlist.

Celtic no longer pursuing Brondby’s Kvistgaarden

According to the Daily Record, Celtic have now ‘dropped their interest’ in the man who scored 23 goals in 38 games for Brondby last season.

It is said the Hoops have ‘reservations over Kvistgaarden’s fit’ and won’t be pursuing his signature as a result.

It’s highly likely Kvistgaarden will leave Brondby after five years in the first-team squad and 10 years in total having graduated out of their academy system.

Brondby wanted £10m for Kvistgaarden in January, but it is now said that £12m will be enough to prise him away from the Danish Superliga outfit.

Celtic can’t compete for Kvistgaarden

Celtic are right to back down from chasing Kvistgaarden’s signature, because it would have been energy needlessly wasted.

Kvistgaarden, after another tremendous season in front of goal, has seen his stock rise even further and that’s why a Premier League club are interested.

West Ham have way more financial muscle than Celtic, especially when it comes to fitting Kvistgaarden into their wage structure.

Eintracht Frankfurt and new contenders Lazio are just below, but even their appeal outweighs Celtic’s due to the greater exposure of the Bundesliga and Serie A respectively.

In the meantime, Celtic are about to complete the free transfer of Callum Osmand from Fulham.
