The last few days have seen Celtic part ways with several of their wide options.

Luis Palma has joined Lech Poznan and Marco Tilio is expected to sign for SK Rapid Vienna on loan with an option to buy.

Nicolas Kuhn also signed for Como earlier in the window and there are reports suggesting that Hyunjun Yang is close to becoming a Norwich City player.

It means that a winger or two is a priority for Brendan Rodgers this summer and Charlie Mulgrew knows the exact type the Celtic manager will be looking for.

Celtic need a winger who will chip in

Over the years the likes of Kuhn, Jota, James Forrest and Daizen Maeda have all regularly been amongst the goals.

Take the 2024/25 season for example, Kuhn scored 21 goals and Maeda bagged more than 30 in all competitions.

It’s been an important part of the Bhoys’ success and Mulgrew thinks Celtic will be identifying a similar profile.

Speaking on Go Radio, he said: “I think Celtic need another winger. I think wingers, in the past 10 years for Celtic, have played a huge part in everything they are — speed, assists, goals.

“I think Brendan Rodgers would love a winger that has goal contributions, that can score goals. And I think that’s a big area they can improve on.”

How many wingers do Celtic need?

At the time of writing, Celtic have three fit first team wingers, two looking likely to leave and one out injured until 2026 in Jota.

Should the two expected departures go through, at least two wingers would have to be brought in, you could imagine.

There are conflicting reports about Michel-Ange Balikwisha to Celtic and rumours surrounding him will rumble on no doubt.

Other targets are also being identified but if Celtic were to go all out for only one position, this is the one.
