‘He’s away’ – Celtic fans react to Brendan Rodgers’ comments on Shin Yamada

Celtic are closing in on another signing as this busy transfer window continues to make noise.

Perhaps, from the perspective of the Celtic supporters, they aren’t getting what they want, but a total of six new players have been brought in during the 2025 summer transfer window.

Shin Yamada is expected to add his name to that list because he is set to be the club’s latest transfer addition from Japan.

This would be Celtic’s second incoming from the J-League this summer, after the arrival of defender Hayato Inamura from Albirex Niigata.

What has Brendan Rodgers said about Shin Yamada?

It’s crazy to think of the number of strikers Celtic have on their books right now, yet Rodgers still wants to add to his forward line.

That’s now Yamada, Adam Idah, Johnny Kenny, and summer signing Callum Osmand. Not forgetting that Daizen Maeda can also play that role.

That’s why Rodgers is saying, ‘but we’d want to add to our front line also’ after talking about Yamada coming in (Daily Record).

The Celtic manager also added: ‘Hopefully this can be one of a number of players we can bring in that aspect. He’s got intensity and workrate. It’s something the scouts have seen.

“In terms of the club, we will bring in players to develop and players for now. Even though he’s a bit older, he’s probably one of those who can give us that intensity and pressure.”

Celtic fans react to Rodgers’ comments on Yamada

Given that Celtic are still looking for a striker, even though Yamada is expected to sign, the comments from the boss are raising eyebrows.

Many of the Celtic Park faithful think it signals that the manager isn’t getting what he wants because many are frustrated at the lack of real quality that hasn’t arrived.

Of course, it adds even more drama with Rodgers’ contract running out in 2026, and many think it only points to one thing: that the manager is leaving.

@pg932013 isn’t too impressed: ‘What a way to welcome a new signing.’

@mmabhoy1888 thinks history is repeating itself: ‘We’ve been here before with Rodgers – “We’ve a million wingers.” He’ll be gone with the first decent offer.’

Another worried Celtic fan, as @bigdevineuk added: ‘Doesn’t make for good reading. Are we looking at a summer of Shved, with cheap punts being forced on the manager while he’s looking for quality?’

@fmg1965 questioned Rodgers: ‘The same Brendan that said when he came back?…”I’ll coach the players the club gives me.”

@TDogMurphy has gone in a little strong: ‘This has all the hallmarks of a disastrous season and Rodgers leaving after an abysmal January window, and I really don’t understand the board’s position when we’ve never been stronger financially.’

@Celtic_Dylan stated the whole situation is ‘really strange’: ‘So we’ll have Idah, Yamada, Osmand, plus another. Presuming Kenny leaves, which in reality I think he will. Seems rather strange.’

@6ftIs compared the situation to when Antonio Conte was at Spurs: ‘One for Brendan, one for club (like Conte at Spurs) could be the new transfer system/philosophy. The only issue is when there’s a stubborn manager who wants to use ‘his’ players…’

@Stewarty8667 can’t see Rodgers signing a new contract: ‘He’s away, the board aren’t backing him and it’s blatantly obvious.’

Another Celtic fan who is also worried about Rodgers’ future, as @tamclintoff stated: ‘Brutal. He’s off after this season for sure. He is just reliving his first tenure. Is this something we need to get used to? Is “the manager is god” at cfc ending? The new manager will work with the players, provided?’

@SanfranCeltic wants to see Kenny being handed more of a chance: ‘Kenny showed enough tonight to make us think the lad deserves a chance.’

@ryan_carr3 told Yamada what his future looks like: ‘Bringing in players to “develop” only works if they actually play or at least have a Yang/Oh type role. Going to Lennoxtown and then sitting in the stand doesn’t develop players, and that’s what the future looks like for Yamada & Inamura, given BR’s comments. Very strange.’

@MiniKeek thinks fans shouldn’t be surprised: ‘Why are people shocked at this. He said a long time ago the club signed players, and it’s his job to coach them and try to make them grow into a talent. It’s always been that way. He’ll rarely get a say in a signing.’

Another annoyed Celtic fan, as @OrielCelt added: ‘It’s actually depressing in windows now season after season. Same nonsense every season. That lineup tonight was a shocker.’
