‘He’s top, top’ – Luke McCowan lauds the Celtic bench player impressing in pre-season training

There is nothing better for Celtic fans than watching one of their own taking to the pitch.

Last season, the likes of captain Callum McGregor, Celtic’s most decorated player of all time, James Forrest, and 2024 summer signing, Luke McCowan, were proudly wearing that badge.

But during the 2025 summer transfer window, Celtic have brought back two players who have the green and white colours in their blood.

The returning Kieran Tierney has stolen the headlines, but goalkeeper Ross Doohan has also made a comeback after re-joining from Aberdeen.

And the recently-capped Scotland star is already impressing in Celtic’s pre-season training.

Luke McCowan speaks highly of Ross Doohan in Celtic training

Doohan is Celtic’s third-choice keeper, behind number one Kasper Schmeichel and his back-up, Viljami Sinisalo.

So, you do wonder where Doohan will earn his minutes from next season, and he will probably be spending quite a lot of time on the bench.

But, all the player himself can do is impress in training, and according to McCowan, that’s exactly what is happening, as he labelled his former Ayr teammate as a ‘top, top goalkeeper’, as he told the Celtic FC Podcast.

“It definitely will,” agreed McCowan, that having more boyhood Celtic fans adds to the atmosphere in the Celtic dressing room.

“You have got Ross (Doohan), who I have known as well, playing with at Ayr. He knows the club inside and out. Coming through here.

“He’s a great guy. Probably one of the more calmer goalies, I would say, I have met or one of the more normal ones, should I say.

“But he is a very humble and a very honest guy. He likes to work hard. Go about his business. He is a top, top goalkeeper. He has shown that in the first couple of days he has been here, and why he deserves to be here. He is a top guy to have around the place.”

Doohan is hopeful despite the ‘third-choice’ tag at Celtic

Doohan was the back-up option at Aberdeen, so it’s not like he has come from a side where he has been playing week in and week out for the last few years.

Therefore, it’s understandable why this ‘third-choice’ tag has been put over his head, and the player himself understands it.

When Doohan signed, whilst speaking in his media press conference, he was pretty bullish about his chances of earning minutes.

“It’s obviously going to be difficult, two top goalkeepers at the club already,” stated Doohan. “I am buzzing to be working with them.

“I am just looking to go in there, work as hard as I can, put my face out there, and I am hoping to push myself into the team. I know it will be hard.

“But I am just going to work as hard as I can. I back myself. I just need to go into training, work as hard as I can, and show everyone what I can do. They haven’t seen me in training for a few years since I left, so I need to show them what I am like now and really push myself and try to knock on the door of the team.”
