It has been an interesting road for Brendan Rodgers since his return to Celtic last season.
Everyone witnessed Rodgers utterly dominate in his first spell, and now normal service has resumed as Celtic push for the Treble in his second spell in charge.
One of the key reasons behind Celtic’s success, both during Rodgers’ time in the dugout, and when he has been away, has been the club’s transfer recruitment.
At times, it has frustrated the Celtic Park faithful because patience has been needed, given the type of signings that have been made.
Most of the time, you don’t get to see that experienced, seasoned-pro, or even proven player arrive, normally, it’s an unknown talent that turns into a gem.
But, during the recent summer transfer window, Celtic brilliantly covered both worlds, and it got a nod of appreciation from Kris Boyd.

Kris Boyd says Viljami Sinisalo is a ‘shrewd’ signing from Celtic
When Joe Hart retired in the summer, everyone automatically thought that Celtic would just bring in a young player to replace the Englishman.
Yes, Celtic signed Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa, but they also brought in the vast experience of Leicester City’s former title winner, Kasper Schmeichel.
Taking all of this into account, Boyd told Sky Sports that Celtic have done well, and he has, especially, liked the signing of Sinisalo.
“I think the key thing to add to that is, he has played games,” said Boyd. “He has had a few loan spells as well. He might be young, but he has played games. He has had the experience.
“It’s not like you are just throwing him in. He hasn’t played, and it’s been U23 football at Aston Villa, but he has been out and played the men’s game. He understands the roles. He understands the pressures of having to win.
“I think, for Celtic, it was a shrewd signing in the summer. For Kasper Schmeichel, he was the number one.
“But bringing him in, but not only that, watching Kasper Schmeichel train every single day. Understanding the roles and responsibilities of what it takes to be a top goalkeeper is only going to benefit Sinisalo in the long run.”
Mixed start for Sinisalo as Kasper Schmeichel pushes for Celtic return
That’s two Premiership matches for Sinisalo – one win, including a clean sheet, and that defeat against St Johnstone over the weekend.
Sinisalo wasn’t at fault for the St Johnstone loss, but he was still part of the team, and it has been a mixed start for him, on that front.
| Games | Goals conceded | Clean sheet |
| 3 | 1 | 2 |
Now it’s a case of waiting to see for how much longer he will keep those number one gloves, as Schmeichel could return before the close of play.
Reaching the Scottish Cup final is a big possibility, and perhaps that’s when the number one will return, but in the meantime, all of this is a learning curve and a huge benefit to Sinisalo.
