Celtic fans are breathing a sigh of relief because a new striker is walking through the doors very soon.
On Thursday, Celtic face Bologna in the Europa League, and one of the topics during Martin O’Neill’s press conference was around Tomas Cvancara.
Celtic are set to sign Tomas Cvancara on a loan deal until the end of the season, with an option to buy from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Standing at 6ft 2 inches, there seems to be a suggestion that Cvancara is a ‘target man’, but O’Neill wanted to put that right.

It looks like we finally have our striker… what are your first impressions of Tomas Cvancara

Martin O’Neill corrects the theory around Tomas Cvancara’s style of play
During O’Neill’s legendary first spell as the Celtic manager, he had some of the best forwards ever seen in the famous green and white colours.
It was suggested to O’Neill in his Bologna press conference that Cvancara could be similar to those, in regard to being a ‘target man.’
But Celtic’s interim coach wanted to shut that down and explained what type of striker the Hoops are bringing through the doors.
Reporter: “Looking at Tomas Cvancara, he looks like quite a big physical profile of a striker. Is that maybe a throwback to the type of striker you had previously?”
O’Neill: “No, he’s not actually a target man, believe it or not. He’s not one that you just want to. He’s quite quick. He’s not really that.
“That’s something I just want to say to you. He’s not the John Hartson type, or when Chris (Sutton) played alongside Henrik Larsson, that type of thing.
“But he is quick and agile. And he wants to prove himself. But if you think he’s the immediate answer to any problem that we have, I am not sure I want to throw that type of responsibility on him.
WhoScored on Cvancara’s style of play ahead of Celtic arrival
That’s O’Neill’s take on what Cvancara will bring to the table, and every Celtic fan is hoping he is very successful because there is a three-way title battle unfolding in Scotland.
But WhoScored is one of the most popular data-driven football sites, and it’s interesting to see what they have listed as Cvancara’s style of play.
This is a small breakdown of it…
- Indirect free-kick threat
- Likes to play short passes
- Likes to cross
- Likes to do flick-ons
- Gets fouled often
- Does not dive into tackles
