The January transfer window is going to be pivotal for Wilfried Nancy’s long-term hopes at Celtic.
Things have been pretty rough for Celtic’s new manager, including losing his first four games in charge, but he picked up his first win against Aberdeen on Sunday.
Amid the doom and gloom of Nancy’s start, there is one obvious issue staring everyone in the face, and it needs addressing during the January transfer window.
Celtic need a centre-forward because the current crop lack a ruthless nature to their game, and the Open Goal panel are backing Kyogo Furuhashi to come back home.
Should Celtic re-sign Kyogo in January?

Open Goal panel on Celtic possibly re-signing Kyogo Furuhashi
Kyogo is struggling for goals and game time at Birmingham City, who are sitting mid-table in England’s second-tier.
Given the Japan star’s situation and Celtic’s current striker issues, Paul Slane suggested on Open Goal that the champions of Scotland should re-sign the penalty box poacher.
Slane made it clear that he would take Kyogo back ‘in a second’, even though Si Ferry suggested that Celtic just can’t keep re-signing their former players.
Ferry: “See, in January, where are you getting a really good centre-forward and a centre-back, that the level Celtic want.
“Are you getting that in January? They couldn’t get them in the summer. How are you going to get them now in January?”
Slane: “Kyogo, would you take Kyogo back? He hasn’t been playing for Birmingham, has he? I would take him back in a second, aye. There is one right away.”
Ferry: “What are you just going to keep signing your old players? That’s what they are doing, isn’t it?!”
You have £20m to spend in the January transfer window. How are you spending it?
Kyogo’s numbers since leaving Celtic
To say that life hasn’t worked out for Kyogo since he left Celtic last January would be an understatement. It’s gone badly wrong, and the signs suggest that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Jorge Sampaoli was the man who signed Kyogo at Rennes, but he was sacked as soon as his new signing entered the building.
Former Premier League defender Habib Beye then took charge, and pretty much straight away benched the Celtic hero, and that’s where he remained, without scoring a single goal for the French club.
That’s when Kyogo’s move to Chris Davies’ Birmingham City came about, but once again, he is struggling to re-find his goalscoring touch.
- Kyogo’s games since leaving Celtic: 27
- Goals: 1
- Assists: 0
- Total minutes: 926
