The Andy Robertson saga is over.

Dating back to last season, there was a lot of noise around Robertson’s future and whether or not the boyhood Celtic fan would return to Scotland this summer.

It was well-documented that Robertson’s Liverpool contract was due to expire on July 1, and he was going to become a free agent.

Could Celtic have secured Robertson’s services? Perhaps.

But according to Peter Martin, the reason why the deal wasn’t concluded is because of finances, as he told PLZ Soccer.

“Would I have liked to have seen him back up in Scotland?” said Martin. “100%. But I think money and the deal is the driving force in that.”

Celtic target Andy Robertson joins Tottenham Hotspur

Robertson will now play for Tottenham next season, and at the age of 32, you sense that his boyhood dream of representing the Hoops is now over.

Spurs survived relegation from the Premier League on the last day of the 2025/26 campaign, and you sense that players like Robertson have signed to calm down their choppy waters.

Even though Celtic won the domestic double during the recent campaign, and they have Kieran Tierney getting better and better at left-back.

You can still do with characters and leaders like Robertson in the dressing room.

As Peter Martin stated, the Scotland skipper is probably still good enough to play for Liverpool, including how he is just an outright ‘winner.’

“Andy Robertson, 32 years of age, will sign for the London club on July 1st,” said Martin.

“He has announced it. Spurs are happy to signal that he will be in there. He is a leader. He’s a winner, and I think Liverpool have made a huge mistake in getting rid of him. It’s as simple as that. Quite simply, he has more to offer.

“I think he is a better player than Milo Kerkez. Had it not been for the fact that the Liverpool board looked at the Mo Salah affair and thought to themselves, ‘we are going to stick to our guns. We are not going to be giving older players big deals’, and I think that has gone against Andy Robertson.

“He should still have been in the red of Liverpool. But he is a Spurs player.

“Would I have liked to have seen him back up in Scotland? 100%. But I think money and the deal is the driving force in that. I think Andy Robertson will make Spurs a better team next season, and I don’t see them fighting relegation.”
