Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor hit out at what they are hearing about Celtic after Bayern Munich loss

Celtic’s European adventure is over for another season.

Brendan Rodgers will have to go the long way around next season because Celtic will have to book their Champions League ticket via qualifiers.

It’s not ideal, but the performances of the team as a whole during this revamped Champions League format are proof that it could and should be done.

On Tuesday night, Celtic suffered heartache in Munich when Alphonso Davies’ stoppage-time equaliser sent the champions of Scotland out of Europe.

It was a bitter pill to swallow because, based on how both teams played, Bayern were lucky to only be 1-0 down in the second leg.

Either way, the reaction from most has been largely complimentary towards Celtic, but there is always someone who drops in a few negative bombs.

Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor defend Celtic’s Champions League campaign

Hours after Celtic were knocked out by Bayern, Jason Cundy proceeded to label the team’s effort as a ‘glorious failure’ and mocked their performance.

Alan Brazil fired back at his fellow talkSPORT colleague by stating that he made the comments with his ‘Chelsea and Rangers hat on’.

Added to that, Gabby Agbonlahor feels that Celtic, and everyone associated with the club, should be ‘proud’ of how they performed.

“That’s Cundy with his Chelsea and Rangers hat on,” responded Brazil. “Well done Chunk (O’Hara for defending Celtic).”

Agbonlahor added: “I was listening for the first hour, the Sports Bar and Cundy is on a wind-up. He isn’t being serious.

“Celtic fans, the players, everyone associated with Celtic, must be proud of that team. To go there, everyone must have thought. I had people messaging me, ‘Oh, I am nervous for tonight. Celtic could get a good beating’.

“To go there and nearly win. Outstanding from Celtic.”

Celtic are making ‘progress’ in Europe

Rodgers has been on this train before where, Celtic have suffered big defeats in Europe, but they haven’t learned from it.

It has been proven this season – look at the result and performances post the Dortmund horror show – that the team is worthy of competing at this level now.

“I said (to the players in the dressing room) that I came back here to make progress in Europe,” said Rodgers.

“If I judge that myself by the game in Munich, then they have given me everything. Now, our job is to learn from that and learn from the experiences we have had this season – get back into the Champions League next season and see if we can improve.”

This is a long-term process for Celtic and there is no reason why, at a bare minimum, they aren’t in the playoff rounds next season.

If that can become a habit, then sooner rather than later, the Bhoys will push through doors they have only dreamt through of previously entering.
