Celtic were not at their best against Dundee in midweek.

The Hoops tripped up in a 3-3 draw at Dens Park despite leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Luke McCowan and Yang.

Brendan Rodgers was livid with his Celtic defence for being “weak” as the boss acknowledged Auston Trusty had to do significantly better in the physical battle after being beaten twice in the lead up to goals.

The third goal in particular was poor marking from the USA international as he was outjumped by Dundee defender Aaron Donnelly who put his side 3-2 up on the night.

Arne Engels spared Celtic‘s blushes with a late penalty after sub Nicolas Kuhn had won it with a strike cannoning off Mo Sylla’s arm inside the box.

Aaron Donnelly did not celebrate for Dundee vs Celtic

But it was Donnelly’s header that had fans and pundits talking after the full-time whistle.

The 21-year-old defender nodded his side into the lead as he bested Trusty inside the box to the delight of the dark blue faithful.

However, rather than wheel away celebrating, the Northern Irishman opted to hold his hands in the air as if to show respect to the Hoops like a former player might.

It was a moment which caused controversy and had Kris Boyd digging out the defender, as the ex-Rangers player always has something to say.

But now Donnelly has explained his side of the story as to why he did not celebrate against Celtic.

And it comes down to a lack of experience in celebrating his strikes as it has been more than two years since he last netted.

Donnelly laughed: “When I scored I didn’t really know what to do, to be honest.

“It has been over two years since I last got a goal! The boys really just got around me which was a great moment for myself and my family watching back home.”

What Rodgers said about Auston Trusty’s defending

Donnelly’s goal frustrated Rodgers who lambasted Trusty in the aftermath of the action.

The manager said: “You’ve got to stay on your feet. It’s as simple as that.

“You’re six-foot-four, you got to deal with that better. But he knows that.

“He understands that, but that’s what I’m saying, across certain as we went a bit soft.”
