Celtic progressed into the Champions League playoffs with a win over Young Boys.

The victory was earned after an own-goal by captain Loris Benito ensured Celtic beat Young Boys to collect the three points that guaranteed another Champions League fixture for the Scottish Champions.

The Swiss club remains rooted to the bottom of the UEFA table after the Celtic Park defeat but they can salvage some pride with a win on the final day to lift them off there with Celtic having an outside chance of reaching the Champions League top eight with a win against Aston Villa.

But the own goal is clearly preying on Benito’s mind as he breaks his silence on his error that sent 60,000 Celtic fans wild.

Young Boys captain ‘extremely bitter’ about Celtic Park Champions League defeat

Just when it looked like Young Boys were escaping with a point, Celtic duo Reo Hatate and Adam Idah combined to force an error from Benito that left the defender feeling absolutely gutted.

Benito told Blick, “I approach the action with the thought that I could still do something. But it happens so quickly.

“I don’t know what I could have done differently.”

“It’s extremely bitter to then go home empty-handed!”

Benito’s ‘bitter pill to swallow’ after Celtic beat Young Boys

Benito then goes on to say that he was sure his Young Boys team were heading back to Switzerland ‘with pride’ with a 0-0 Celtic Park draw closing in.

“When you think about the history of this stadium,” continues Benito, “When you see the atmosphere here.

“The many reasons why we would have taken this point home with pride.

“It’s brutal. It’s a bitter pill to swallow for what I’m taking home. Because otherwise, I was doing very well in the match.”

Celtic fans will not care because, despite Benito’s error, they know their team deserved the three points after watching a game where three goals were chalked off as well as Hoops midfielder Arne Engels missing a penalty.
