The striker Celtic should look at revisiting if their need for attacking prowess hastens

Celtic could be set for a chaotic end to the window that could see significant movement in both directions before the deadline.

Matt O’Riley is reportedly nearing a move to Brighton & Hove Albion after the Seagulls submitted a bid thought to be worth £26 million for the Denmark international.

Yesterday, news surfaced detailing that Manchester City hold an interest in Kyogo Furuhashi alongside another younger unnamed candidate as they look to strengthen their forward line.

Nothing is set in stone. The Premier League champions haven’t even fully determined whether they will enter the market for another striker. Still, the football world will find out soon enough as the Citizens switch their focus to other targets once they officially sign Ilkay Gundogan.

Should Celtic’s need for attacking reinforcements hasten, there is one player who could be worth revisiting late in the window.

Mathias Kvistgaarden and Celtic’s long-standing admiration

Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden is a familiar name to Celtic supporters following prolonged links between the reigning Scottish Premiership champions and the Denmark Under-21 international.

The Bhoys made late contact in January regarding his availability in the January transfer window. They also failed with a £4 million approach to try and land the 22-year-old last summer.

Last campaign, he went on to put up some impressive numbers for Brondby, registering ten goals and seven assists in 28 appearances. Continuing his prowess into this term, Kvistgaarden has netted five goals and laid on three for his teammates in eight outings.

Celtic need players who can hit the ground running in the event of surprise departures. Per Fotmob, he has already taken 15 shots in just 283 minutes of football in 2024/25 and racked up an Expected Goals tally of 3.21, illustrating a regular capability to get himself into promising positions.

His pace is also a main asset, and there would be no problems finding his intelligent runs in behind, fitting Brendan Rodgers’ way of working.

The Bhoys will already have a detailed understanding of his capabilities after previously courting the striker. Should he be available, it may just be worth asking the question before the deadline.

What has Mathias Kvistgaarden said about his future

Back in June, Kvistgaarden admitted he would be open to a move elsewhere to try and further his prospects of a call-up to the senior Denmark side.

He explained: “There is no doubt about that. I think I have shown myself in a lot of ways, which means that I have shown that I can hopefully also play internationally at some point.”

Celtic have opened talks with LAFC to sign Polish forward Mateutz Bogusz. It remains to be seen whether that happens, but it is unclear whether he would be utilised as a central striker or in an attacking midfield role.

All I’m saying is if there is an opportunity there to land Kvistgaarden before the deadline, Celtic should at least consider the thought should they require an added layer of quality in the final third.
