Ian McCall hits back at Tom English over Kyogo Furuhashi and Celtic transfer claim

Celtic’s search for a striker continues.

It’s crazy to think that 12 months after Kyogo Furuhashi left Celtic for Rennes, the club haven’t replaced such an important figure in the XI.

Talk during the January transfer window has suggested that Celtic could replace Kyogo with Kyogo, which would just sum up the board.

Whether a move would happen for the now Birmingham City player seems unlikely, but Tom English’s suggestion that Celtic shouldn’t sign the player didn’t sit well with Ian McCall.

Ian McCall and Tom English disagree on Kyogo Furuhashi returning to Celtic

It just happened to be perfect timing that, amid rumours about Kyogo possibly returning to Celtic, he scored for Birmingham City in the FA Cup over the weekend.

That was his second goal for the English Championship side, and English wanted to point out on BBC Radio Scotland how the former Celtic treble-winner has struggled since leaving Parkhead.

English thinks it’s a reason why the Hoops shouldn’t even consider bringing their former player back, but McCall was having none of it.

Despite netting twice in 12 months and hardly even getting off the bench during his ill-fated Rennes spell, McCall thinks Kyogo could find that spark once again in Glasgow.

That’s why he feels that if there is a chance for the champions of Scotland to bring in the poacher, then they shouldn’t hesitate.

McCall: “I don’t think there is a standout favourite for the title. Rangers should come into the equation with the run they are on. Martin (O’Neill) coming back here. If he signs two or three.

“ I disagree with Tom (English) about Kyogo. I think Kyogo, for four months, if he scored 15 goals, he might get re-ignited because he is coming in at Celtic.”

English: “He has scored (two goals) in a year, Ian.”

McCall: “That doesn’t matter.”

English: “It does. It actually does.”

McCall: “Actually, Tom, if you listen, if you have ever been in football, sometimes the stadium re-ignites you because you have had such good memories before.

“That might have happened with Kyogo. It’s totally short-term-ism, but that’s what they need right now. They don’t need a five-year plan.”
